The Sunshine Coast Regional District Aquatic Centre’s use a 7 level program for children 4 months to 5 years of age. Use the descriptions below to help determine what level/class your child should attend. You can always contact the swimming pool you choose to use for help and more information. Starfish – 4 to 18 months: An introductory class for babies and their parents or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, songs and play in water.
Duck – 18 to 30 months: For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs and active water play.
Sea Turtle – 30 to 4 years: This level develops skills in swimming, glides and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries.
Salamander – 4 to 5 years: Preschooler actively learn new swim swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.
Sunfish – 4 to 5 years: Assisted by an instructor, preschooler work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgment in , on and around the water entries and floats in deep water.
Crocodile – 4 to 5 years: Preschooler start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.
Whale – 4 to 5 years: In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschooler will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.
PARENT AND TOT AQUA FIT

45 minutes of stretching, strengthening and basic conditioning in water. Learn safe and fun exercises you can do while holding your baby in the water. Meet other parents and tots while also focusing on muscle tension, relaxation and postnatal physical adjustments. Infants 4 months to 12 months and who can
hold their head up or hold themselves upright in a floatation device are welcome. Floatation devices will be available. Drop in admission.

SKIING
The Tetrahedron Outdoor Club will be running a full children’s Jackrabbit Cross-Country Ski Program in the winter of 2010 on Dakota Ridge. This Cross Country Canada program is a fun way for kids to learn basic cross-country ski skills while providing an opportunity to ski and socialize with their parents and friends. It also helps children to develop confidence, outdoor winter safety skills, and build overall motor skills. There will be spaces available for a total of 40 children, with two age categories, 4-6 and 7-9 years. The classes will happen on Sundays at 10:00am for eight weeks starting Sunday, January 31, 2010. Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society
For the younger crowd, the Lagoonies Club meets this spring every Monday after school from 3:30-5:00PM. Kids aged 5-13 are invited to the Iris Griffith Centre to play, explore and make new friends. They will explore the weird and wonderful creatures of wetlands and forests, build artistic and scientific skills, and learn to act as stewards of the environment. Child minding service is available for parents of young children (ages 4 months to 6 years old). Parents have the opportunity to take part in an activity offered at the facility knowing their child is being cared for just a few metres away. NOTE: Parents must remain on-site while using this service. Parents can sign-up in advance selecting specific dates from the available options OR drop-in if spaces are available. SCRD Leisure Access Scholarship
The Leisure Access Scholarship (LAS) program assists low-income Sunshine coast residents to participate in recreation programs & services. Eligible low income individuals are provided with an annual LAS subsidy of $200 per person in our Active Net registration system, to assist with the cost of recreation fees. LAS subsidies expire Dec. 31 of each year. LAS recipients apply for the program each year and proof of low income status is requested. To apply, ask for a Leisure Access Scholarship form at an SCRD Recreation centre.
