Coast Parents are asking: Given that I think I can safely assume my rescue dog has not been vaccinated what are the risks if I have him vaccinated for his first shots and he already has been?
Dr. Justin's Answer: Most vets and rescue organizations across the world commonly agree that if you have no vaccination history on a pet, the best answer is to vaccinate as the risk of not doing so is greater than any potential risk of 'over-vaccinating'. Many dogs are even vaccinated by breeders at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks just so they can get them 'out the door' which is again not following the typical 8,12, 16 week vaccination schedule. The diseases you are trying to protect the pup from are deadly, and a pup that has had no or at best 1 vaccine (DA2PPV) is not considered safe. I agree with the socialization concern. Must get pup out exploring only when safe to do so, and one 'potential' vaccine is far from safe. Bottomline: I vaccinate any dog with unknown vaccine history as you must assume (for the pet's safety) that they have had none. This is the philosophy for any rescue organization animal that is found as well.
